Strong waves continued to pummel the coastline today in West Hawaii, but were expected to calm down Saturday, forecasters said.
A high surf advisory will remain in effect until at least 6 p.m. today for west-facing shores, with surf height from 6 to 9 feet, strong currents and dangerous swimming conditions, according to the National Weather Service.
Officials advised beach-goers, swimmers and surfers to exercise caution when entering the water. Shore breaks and dangerous currents could cause injury or death.
As of this morning, the following beaches and parks were temporarily closed: Kahalu‘u, Mahukona, Pu‘uhonua o Honaunau and Kaloko-Honokohau national parks, according to the Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency.
A small craft advisory will continue to be in effect until at least 6 p.m. Saturday from the Alenuihaha Channel to Big Island windward waters, the NWS said.
The west side of the island could expect some mild showers and possibly a thunderstorm this afternoon.
Isolated showers were expected before midnight, with partly cloudy skies, light wind and a low around 54.
Marine forecasters said trade winds may ease up early next week, although a trough could bring a chance of thunderstorms and gusty winds.
Other beaches may also close without notice, officials said.
